Ten more resorts in Moyar elephant corridor issued notice

UDHAGAMANDALAM: Ten more resorts (with restaurants) located in the Moyar Valley elephant corridor in the Nilgiris were issued notice by administration on Monday. A perusal of the documents submitted by the owners proved that the resorts did not comply with the norms for running a commercial establishment. Of the 39 resorts mentioned as illegal in the action plan report submitted by the district administration to the Supreme Court, .
On August 12, the 27 illegal resort complexes, comprising 171 buildings falling under three panchayats in Ooty taluk, were sealed. Two teams headed by a BDO were formed by the district administration to carry out the process of sealing the complexes. As many as 19 officials, including revenue and panchayats and police, were involved in the process.

In the earlier action plan report submitted to the Supreme Court, the Nilgiris collector had said 821 buildings had been identified in the corridor which connects to Bandipur and the north-eastern slope of the Nilgiris and further down. The report said there were 309 resorts, of which 39 had restaurant facilities. The remaining structures comprise 390 houses and other buildings.

However, the Supreme Court said, “We have seen the plan of action report filed by the collector of the Nilgiris. For the time being, we are concerning ourselves with the resort complexes with restaurant (commercial buildings) has been given in the report of the collector’.

Of the 39, 12 resorts represented themselves in the court when the hearing was held on August 9. They were asked by the court to produce their relevant documents to the collector within 48 hours.

“After perusal of the submitted documents and conducting ground inspection, 10 of the 12 resorts were found illegal as they had obtained building licenses only for dwelling houses,” J Innocent Divya, Nilgiris collector told TOI. “The other two resorts have 20 buildings, of which only 11 have license for commercially running a resort. The 9 other buildings in the two resorts will also be issued notice.”

According to the collector, after 24 hours of issuance of the notice, the 10 resorts comprising over 100 buildings and the 11 buildings in the two resorts will be sealed as per the apex court order.
