Teen consumes poison due to alleged torture by teacher

Nagpur: A Std X student, aged 15 years, on Friday was admitted at a private hospital in Jaripatka after consuming poison. In his statement to police, the teenager alleged that he took the step following torture by his teacher and supervisor of his school in Mohan Nagar.
The student, it is learnt, had been repeatedly hauled up by a teacher and later by the supervisor for remaining absent. In a video, collected by activist Shahid Sharif, a panellist in deputy director of education office, the student’s family is seen alleging about repeated harassment by the teacher and supervisor, who even made him seat on the floor. TOI has also received the video.

The family claimed the student has been facing the harsh treatment since Std IX. The class teacher would repeatedly make the student summon his parents, the family members said and added that his parents were ill-treated when they had gone to meet him.

According to family members, the teenager was on Thursday insulted in the class despite answering a query correctly. In the video, they can be heard claiming that the boy had bought a floor cleaner and consumed it at his home. When TOI ed the family members, they refused to speak on the issue.

Sharif, who has approached the District Women and Child Development officer Vijay Sinh Pardeshi on the issue, said police should take action under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of children) Act. “Section 75 of the JJ Act should be invoked against the school authorities,” said Sharif.

Apart from Sharif, hospital authorities also alerted Jaripatka police after the boy was admitted there. Senior PI of Jaripatka police station Parag Pote said the teenager’s statement reflects the fact that he was warned of issuing Transfer Certificate (TC) by the class teacher for absenteeism and was also told to bring his parents to school. “We will look into the allegations and weigh them against what the school authorities have to say,” he said.

When TOI ed the school authorities, they denied the allegations and said efforts will be made to meet the student to understand the issue.
