Snatchers turn pilgrims after crime, arrested

CHANDIGARH: Sector 36 police on Saturday arrested two from Sector 33, claiming to have solved three cases of snatchings with this feat.

The police have also recovered cellphones, knife and the Activa scooter which were used to in the execution of the crime from their possession.

The accused have been identified as Ravi (19) of Gawala colony in Maloya and Vinay Kumar (20) of Jujhar Nagar, .

After the crime, both the accused had set out for pilgrimage, said cops.

The accused duo would be produced in the court on Sunday. Cops said that their third accomplice is still on the run, and raids are being conducted to arrest him.

ASP (south division) Niharika Bhatt told TOI that acting on a tip-off, Sector 36 police laid a naka near the forest area in Sector 33 on Saturday morning. As soon as both the accused approached the naka on their Activa scooter, the cops nabbed Ravi and Vinay. During their interrogation, the police recovered three snatched cellphones and a knife.

The ASP informed that the accused had committed three snatchings in just one night at Sectors 38 and 53 and near PGI at knifepoint on August 3. The duo had snatched three cellphones from commuters by showing them a knife and had fled on their scooter after the crimes.

Police said that after committing the crimes, both the accused had gone for pilgrimage to Haridwar and Rishikesh. As they came back to the city, the cops nabbed them from Sector 33. The Activa scooter used in the crime was registered under the name of Vinay’s mother, police said.

“Both the accused are drug addicts and to fulfil their desire of drugs they used to commit crimes like snatchings,” the ASP told TOI.

Vinay is a criminal on police record and had been previously arrested for brawl and snatchings by the Mohali police. Ravi used to work as a sweeper, while Vinay was employed at a car service station in Maloya.

Sector 36 police has busted the third gang of snatchers and auto-lifters in the past ten days.

Sector 36 police have arrested a total of six snatchers, auto-lifters and claim to have recovered as many as 13 snatched and stolen cellphones from the criminals. A stolen vehicle was also recovered by the police.
