Rajkot: The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) and city police has given ultimatum to those who have knowingly or unknowingly encroached upon public spaces meant for parking and other purposes.
The civic body has given people 48 hours, that is till morning of August 16, to clear the encroachments themselves. The city administration jointly with the police department has planned a mega anti-encroachment drive to free parking spaces in the city from August 16.

Addressing media persons RMC commissioner Banchha Nidhi Pani said, “Encroached parking space near the malls and commercial complexes will be cleared during the drive. Illegal structures erected in parking space will razed. Notices have already been issued to concerned people. The hawker’s zone that creates hurdles for smooth traffic will be shifted soon. A team will survey in all the wards during peak hours to assess traffic movements.”

Pani added that hotels and restaurants will be compelled to remove hoardings, tables and chairs and other belonging kept in parking areas or footpaths.

Quoting Gujarat high court’s recent order RMC commissioner said, “We will revisit all the property that were regularized under Gujarat Regularization of Unauthorized Development Act to see if it has sufficient parking facility. If they don’t have parking facility the regularized construction under the act will be removed.”

RMC currently has 23 parking sites and plans to set up 26 new sites for public parking. It will also develop a mobile phone application for visitors to get the information on parking space in the city.

The civic body has also provided two towing vans to traffic police department. According to traffic police they issue 1,800 memos per day which was about 200 per day a month back. Traffic currently has 350 traffic wardens and has demanded 150 more from the government.
