THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala is witnessing the worst ever crisis with red alert declared in all the 14 districts which are witnessing heavy rain.
As many as 35 dams have been opened in the state due to heavy inflow of water. The Mullaperiyar dam has touched its maximum capacity of 142 feet following which chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has appealed to his Tamil Nadu counterpart to reduce the water level in the dam by taking more water. All the 13 shutters of dam have been opened now.
As per the government reports, 42 deaths have been reported in the state after the rain started on August 9 and seven people are missing. Due to flooding, the CIAL airport in Kochi has shut down its operations. All the flights coming to this airport have been diverted to Thiruvananthapuram and Bangalore.
Air India Express has decided to operate all its flights from Thiruvananthapuram. The Sabarimala hill shrine has been isolated with Pampa and Triveni overflowing. The Travancore Devaswom Board has banned trekking to the hill shrine till further notice.
The central rescue teams have been deployed in all the major districts affected by heavy floods and landslides. At present, 14 rescue teams are based in Wayand, Aluva and Pathanamthitta. A group of military engineering task force personnel will reach the state capital in the evening from Pune by three AN-32 IAF aircraft.
Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala, who spoke to Union home minister Rajnath Singh, urged the Centre to send more central forces to carry out the rescue operations.
The train services in the state have been widely disrupted due to landslips in many region. The services between Thiruvananthapuram and Nagercoil has been stopped temporarily. The state capital and Kollam, the only two districts where the rain had not created much damage all these days, received the heaviest rain on Wednesday. Most of the areas in the two districts are under water blocking road traffic in many places.
The district collectors of Allapuzha, Kottayam, Wayanad, Thrissur, Pathanamthitta and Kozhikode have declared holiday for all the educational institutions on Thursday.
