GUWAHATI: Thousands of people revisited NRC (centres) across on Friday as authorities started distributing forms through which they can know the reasons for the exclusion of their names from the final that was published on July 30. This process, which was earlier scheduled to start from Tuesday, was rescheduled to Friday.
Once an excluded person submits the form, the local registrar of citizens‘ registration will inform through a confidential ‘letter of information‘ (LoI) the reasons for which his/her name was not included. After receiving the LoI, the person will be able to make an appeal for a review of his/her omission by filing claims between August 30 and September 28. The LoI will inform the time schedule and place for submission of claims. Separate forms for correction in spellings of names, age, address and other details are also being distributed.
The Centre is preparing the modalities for filing claims and objections, which will be presented to the Supreme Court on August 16 for approval. Earlier, authorities had posted Registrar General of India‘s modalities in specimen copies of the forms for filing claims and objections but removed them from their website a day after the SC warned top NRC officials that they could be held guilty of contempt for speaking to the media about the process.
