VADODARA: For the National Students Union of India (), Saturday was supposed to be a day to earn some brownie points over their rival student outfits by celebrating Friendship Day at the campus which is gearing up to hold MS University Students Union (MSUSU) elections.
The student outfit backed by the Congress had also announced that it will hold special celebrations at MSU campus on Saturday – the eve of friendship day that is celebrated on first Sunday of August every year.
But a dispute over campaigning for the forthcoming MSUSU polls, scheduled on August 24, turned damp squib for the student outfit which is struggling to put its house together.
Two groups of NSUI came at loggerheads at the main building of MSU’s largest faculty – the Faculty of Commerce – during the friendship day celebrations.
In full public glare, supporters of two student leaders, both of whom are eyeing candidature for the post of faculty secretary (FGS), came at blows at the faculty.
Sources suggest that a group led by Krupal Patel, a probable FGS candidate, had organised the friendship day programme at the faculty in which another probable candidate Jay Patel, had also participated.
Later, Jay, organised another programme to celebrate the day with his supporters during which a student leader allegedly pushed the former which resulted in chaos.
Although the crowd was dispersed, the supporters again clashed at near the faculty building. Embarrassed by the open fights that are surfacing ahead of the students union polls, NSUI’s Vadodara unit office-bearers later in the day ensured that the warring groups struck a compromise. But by then, the damage was already done.
It is worth mentioning here that neither NSUI nor the right wing backed have declared their candidates for the two top posts of MSUSU general secretary and vice-president even as countdown for the polls has already begun.
