CHANDIGARH: Insufficient number of staffers and bad infrastructure for lifting of garbage in Manimajra by Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC) is affecting the day-to-day collection in the area. For past one month, the residents welfare association-Modern Housing Complex (RWA-MHC) has been taking up this matter with the authorities to act upon for a solution, but to no avail.
Sources said 48 sweepers were deployed in this area. Out of them, only 30 are left at present. Adding to the woes is that the staff do not have proper carts to lift the garbage. There are in total five carts and all of them have some issues and hence cannot be used for lifting the garbage in the area. The MC health department has deployed a big tractor for the city, and the garbage in MHC, Manimajra, is lifted by this tractor only when its turn comes after 10 or 15 days.
Resultantly, the area ends up having heaps of garbage lying on the roadside emanating foul smell till they are cleaned after a gap of 10-15 days.
Col Gursewak Singh, president of RWA-MHC, said, “We will now take up the matter with the MC mayor as this is a major area which needs to be focussed on under of the Central government.”
