KSRTC begins fuel efficiency drive

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala State Road (KSRTC) has launched a campaign to control usage. The ‘My KMPL 5‘ campaign aims to increase the kilometre per litre usage to 5. The campaign promoted by the social media cell of expects to save Rs 10 crore per month, by improving the KMPL to 5.

KSRTC incurs an expenditure of Rs 3 crore on fuel daily. With an average daily collection of Rs 6 crore, the corporation spends nearly 50% of its revenue on fuel purchase.

Improving the fuel efficiency was among the recommendations submitted by consultant Sushil Khanna, appointed for preparing a project for the restructuring of KSRTC.

In the interim report submitted by Khanna, he states that fuel consumption in KSRTC is worst among its peers, at 4.15kmpl. He recommended to raise it to 5 kmpl.

“Raising fuel efficiency of buses through adoption of adequate policies and routine overhauls of buses can help KSRTC save around Rs 144 crore annually,” the report stated. Assigning a crew to a bus to monitor fuel efficiency and introducing financial incentives for meeting the targets and penalties for those who operate bus below 4.5kmpl were among the suggestions put forward in the interim report. It proposed to identify the low-kmpl drivers and provide their training to improve the performance. KSRTC had issued a circular on fuel usage last month, in which he had asked the unit officers to control the fuel usage and reduce expenses.
