KOLKATA: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation needs at least 10 sunny days to ensure patchwork repair of badly damaged roads across the city, a task which is an uphill one, concedes a section of the KMC roads department officials. However, that is the official deadline given to the KMC and some state government agencies by mayor on Monday.

“We could not undertake repair of roads due to incessant rains. Now we need to wrap up repair process on some of the real bad stretches of roads across the city. We need at least 10 days of dry spells to complete the mammoth task,” Chatterjee said. However, according to a senior KMC official, going by the condition of city’s roads the 10-day deadline was a ‘mission impossible’. “Large stretches of city’s major thoroughfares have developed craters. Condition of city’s arterial roads like EM Bypass or Diamond Harbour Road has been pathetic. This apart, some stretches of major roads like CIT Road (), APC Roy Road, Amherst Street, J L Nehru Road, S P Mukherjee Road, Rashbehari Avenue, Deshapran Sashmal Road, Anwar Shah Road or NSC Bose Road are equally bad. It is impossible even to go for a patchwork repair of these roads by next 10 days even if it does not rain,” a KMC roads department official said on Monday.

Mayor Sovan Chatterjee on Monday held a high-level meeting at the KMC headquarters to set a deadline for repair of some of the worst stretches of city’s thoroughfares. Besides KMC senior officials the meeting which was also attended by officials of central and state government agencies like Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT), Railway Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), state Public Works Department (PWD), Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC) and Kolkata Police took stock of the condition of city’s roads which need urgent attention. Kolkata police traffic department has handed over a list of more than 200 stretches (or spots) of roads (including EM Bypass and DH Road) to the KMC which have been causing traffic snarl due to non-repair. Some of these roads include underpass, Circular Garden Reach Road, DH Road, EM Bypass, Budge Budge Trunk Road, Taratala Road among others.

While mayor asked the KMDA officials to take care of the stretches of EM Bypass, the state PWD officials were asked to take up repair of some battered stretches of DH Road. The RVNL officials present in the meeting were told to coordinate with the KMDA or the PWD officials for repair of the badly broken stretches of DH Road or EM Bypass. However, Kolkata mayor said that the KMC would help the state or central government agencies by providing manpower or road repair material. “With the road repair gang and material at our disposal, we will do the repairing of Kolkata roads under our jurisdiction without hassles. We have no dearth of infrastructure for helping the state or central government agencies in taking up repair of roads under their jurisdiction,” Chatterjee said.
