BHUBANESWAR: The economic offences wing (EOW) of the state Crime Branch on Friday said it has arrested educationist A Johnsel Raja from Nagercoil in on charges of cheating students of Sardar Rajas Medical College and Hospital of nearly Rs 10 crore.
Arrested on July 26, the 54-year-old Raja was brought to on transit remand on Friday and produced in the court of judicial magistrate first class at Junagarh in Kalahandi.

Raja headed the trust which ran the private institute at Jaring in Kalahandi district. He complained of illness after his arrest, following which he had to be admitted to the Kanyakumari Government Hospital. This led to the delay in bringing him to Odisha.

On September 1, 2015, the Odisha government had lodged a complaint with Junagarh police against Raja for allegedly having flouted the conditions of a memorandum of understanding which he had signed with the Western Odisha Development Council (WODC) for setting up the medical college and hospital in Kalahandi.

In the complaint, it was alleged that Raja‘s Selvam Educational and Charitable Trust, which was running the medical college and hospital, obtained permission from the Medical Council of India (MCI) for conducting admissions to its MBBS course for 2013-14 and 2014-15 by furnishing fake documents. It was further alleged that Raja misappropriated crores of rupees that he had collected as admission fees from 124 students.
