BENGALURU: The city’s first cable-stayed hanging bridge, constructed 15 years ago to overcome traffic snarls at KR Puram railway station, has got an automated .
Police have installed the signal at the mouth of the bridge near Tin Factory (on the HP fuel station side) to streamline traffic. “The bridge was inaugurated in 2003 to ease traffic pile-up over KR Puram railway station on Old Madras Road, and the flow was seamless for a few years. But with traffic snarls worsening, we have been forced to install a signal at the bridge,” a police officer said. With this, all vehicles coming from Mahadevapura and Kolar-Hosakote will have to wait at the bridge for the signal to turn green.
Explaining the need for the signal, the officer said: “Tin Factory junction is chaotic as vehicles going towards Indiranagar and Hebbal criss-cross each other. Metro work has only compounded the woes of motorists, who are forced to wait for 15-20 minutes to cross the junction.” Daily, at least 25 lakh vehicles use the junction.
Earlier, a posse of 8-10 policemen would man traffic pouring in from all directions. But it wasn’t an easy job and they would complain of dust and extra workload. “Signals were put up on public demand. Traffic experts don’t feel they can improve the situation. We think upgradation of infrastructure is the only solution,” said additional commissioner of police (traffic) R Hithendra.
Vehicle flow on rise
Traffic cops said congestion at the junction may double over the next four-five years. “It’s a free-for-all situation. Vehicles entering the city from Old Madras Road, Kolar and other parts, and those plying in the opposite direction towards Kolar, Whitefield, Mahadevapura and ITPB clog the Tin Factory junction and Kasturinagar down ramp. Signals have now been installed at these two junctions,” a policeman said.
“The situation could improve once Metro begins operations on this corridor. But by then, the number of vehicles too would have increased,” another policeman said.
