LUCKNOW: After deciding to immerse the ashes of former PM in various rivers of the state, UP government on Saturday announced that poems penned by the BJP stalwart would be recited by inmates lodged in all state jails.
UP jail minister Jai Kumar Singh ‘Jaiki’, in an interview to a news channel in New Delhi, said that the state government is planning that jail inmates recite Atal ji’s poems during social gatherings at least once a month.
He said that the poems written by Vajpayee are a source of inspiration to people, especially those who are going through a hard phase in life. According to records, more than 1 lakh inmates are lodged in 75 jails in .
Jaiki’s response came on a query to him if the state government planned to convert any jail into a memorial in the name of Vajpayee.
To this, Jaiki said that the state government wanted to do so but Atal had been lodged in jail, which is now in , during a farmers’ movement against Congress in 1973. “The state government is giving all the due respect to one of the tallest political figures India ever had,” he said.
UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath had on Thursday announced that the ashes of Vajpayee would be immersed in rivers across the state.
The government is also planning to construct memorials in Vajpayee’s name in his ancestral village of Bateshwar (in Agra), Lucknow, Kanpur and Balrampur.
