Thiruvananthapuram: The subway at Nemom on the Karamana-Kaliyikkavila road is troubling the pedestrians with various inadequacies. Commissioned two years ago, the subway gets inundated during every rain, making it unusable.
The 27m-long subway was constructed in 2016 to ensure safe passage to local people, especially students of Government UP School and the Victory Vocational and Higher Secondary school located at Nemom. The buildings of the UP School are located on two sides of the Karamana-Kaliyikkavila road.
Since it is a busy road, the subway was built for the convenience of the students and the key was given to the school authority. As the school and its annexe are situated on two sides of the road, the school staff use the subway to take the afternoon meals to the annexe.
The school authorities alleged that the unscientific construction of the subway resulted in cracks on the roof of the under passage. During rainy seasons water enters through the cracks and flood the subway. The authorities said that they had already taken the matter to the three MLAs of Nemom, Kattakkada, Kovalam constituencies. “It’s been two years and no action has been taken. During the rainy season the subway gets flooded and adults, as well as students, are forced to cross the busy highway,” said an official. He added that after getting frequent complaints and media attention to this matter, NH officials including superintending engineer and the executive engineer had visited the site. Based on the direction of the PWD, the contractor installed two pumps, which would help to drain the floodwater. “During last year’s rains both the motors became defunct and we had to close the subway. Installing motors are not a permanent solution to this issue,” said a school official.
Now, during the rainy season the school authorities have to hire autorickshaws to take the afternoon meal to the other side.
‘When the road was widened, crossing the road was the one major trouble faced by the students. When the subway was constructed, it was easy for the students. But the unscientific construction of the subway is creating more woes,” said Amina, a parent.
When ed, PWD engineers refused to comment.
