Coimbatore: Coaching classes for government school students to help crack the National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) and Tamil Nadu Rural Students Talent Search Examination (TRuST) began in the district on Saturday.
A total of 400 students attended the coaching classes, which were conducted under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan programme, across the four educational districts of Coimbatore. Officials said students from Classes IX and X were selected for the coaching based on their academic performance. “We have selected two best performers each from Classes IX and X.”

Class X students, who clear NTSE, would be eligible for a monthly scholarship of Rs 1,250 in Classes XI and XII. They would also receive a monthly scholarship of Rs 2,000 during undergraduate and postgraduate studies. If they were to pursue PhD, they would be given a scholarship based on the University Grants Commission (UGC) norms.

Meanwhile, Class IX students who clear TRuST, would be given Rs 1,000 per year until they complete their schooling.

The coaching classes, held under the banner TAN Excel Programme 2018-19, would be held on weekends and all days on quarterly exam vacations until November. The classes are being held in one school in each educational district – Coimbatore Cloth Merchant Association Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School on Raja Street in the city, Municipal Girls’ Higher Secondary Schools in Pollachi and Mettupalayam, and Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School at Ondipudur. While NTSE is open for students from all boards, TRuST is meant for students from government recognised schools in rural areas of the state.
