GHAZIABAD: A 38-year-old , who runs management coaching classes in Vijay Nagar, was arrested on Monday for allegedly posing as a joint secretary posted in the Union home ministry and mounting pressure on Ghaziabad SSP Vaibhav Krishna to take “swift” action in an FIR filed by his relative.
Police said the accused wanted the cops to arrest seven persons, including two priests named by his wife, in a case of brawl.
The alleged imposter has been identified as Verma, a resident of Gokul Dham Society in Siddhartha Vihar.
Police said Verma’s 28-year-old wife, who till recently worked in an MNC as a software engineer and is presently preparing for civil services exams, was getting disturbed in her studies by the loudspeakers used by a temple located in front of her house.
She apparently tried to persuade the temple priests to lower the volume, nut failed. She then filed a police complaint on July 31 against the temple priests from using loudspeakers allegedly during odd hours.
The priests were booked under sections 147 (rioting), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the IPC.
Circle officer 1 (city) said, “After the registration of the FIR, the SSP received a phone call and the caller identified himself as a joint secretary in the Union home ministry. He directed the senior police official to immediately arrest the accused named in the complaint and file a charge sheet in the court in favour of the woman.”
The CO said Verma had the impression that the SSP would take the case on priority basis and arrest the priests and other persons named in the FIR immediately.
“But, the SSP got suspicious of his motives and put his number on surveillance. It was soon found that the caller was none other than the complainant’s husband,” the CO added.
The accused was finally arrested from his home around 8am. Two mobile phones and a SIM used in the crime were also recovered from his possession. Altogether he had made four calls to the SSP and even sent a text message to him on one occasion seeking to know the progress made in the case.
Verma told police that he had also worked in the administrative wing of an electronic media house in the past.
Verma has been booked under sections 419 (cheating) and 170 (personating a public servant) of the IPC.
