Five held in teacher assault case

CHANDIGARH: Police on Saturday arrested five persons, including a juvenile, for allegedly assaulting a teacher at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 45.
Niharika Bhatt, ASP (south division), said the four accused have been identified as Vinod Kumar, Santosh, Pooja and Rama, alias Rani. Police said school teacher Rishi Kumar alleged four students of classes XI and XII along with their relatives and family members had assaulted him near the school on August 9. Initially, the teacher and students reached a compromise and he did not lodge any complaint. However, on the directions of the school principal, the teacher filed a complaint against the accused.

The juvenile was produced before a juvenile justice board and sent to the juvenile home in Sector 25, while the other accused were remanded in judicial custody for 14 days. Police are carrying out raids to catch the other accused.

On August 9, the teacher had scolded a boy and his friend and slapped them because they were creating indiscipline. The boy had called his mother and uncles, who called the teacher out of the class and thrashed him.

On Friday, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) decided to observe August 14 as “black day” as a mark of protest against increasing cases of attacks on teachers by students and parents. The incident had brought the school community together. “The education department must take steps to restore the dignity and safety of teachers. We will condemn such attacks on teachers by observing a Black Day on Tuesday. We have appealed to all teachers to wear black clothes and be part of the protest,” JAC president Bhag Singh Kairon had said.
