LUDHIANA: The survey on fire safety arrangements in buildings in Ludhiana will resume soon. The had stopped the survey during summers as most of the employees were kept on toes to control fire incidents.
The idea to conduct the survey was floated by the MC officials following the fire and building collapse incident in November 2017.
Earlier the survey was conducted in hospitals in the month of March and 25 hospitals were checked at that time. After covering a few hospitals, the fire department had to stop the survey in between.
The fire officials claimed that now the survey will start from commercial complexes in Feroze Gandhi market followed by which rest of the markets will be covered.
The officials will start serving notices to defaulters. Assistant divisional fire officer Bhupinder Singh said they would start serving notices to commercial units in Feroze Gandhi market in the coming week.
Requesting anonymity, an official said they will kick off the survey but there is limited staff in the wing. With the current strength, it is not possible to handle fire incidents as well as office tasks, he added.
He said now festival season is coming and they will have to get their vehicles repaired before festivals, especially Diwali. “There is need to recruit more staff for smooth functioning of the department.”
Notably, the fire officials will check water arrangement in buildings, fire extinguishers, sprinklers, water pressure, proper fire exit points and basement exhaust system. In most of the buildings, essential fire safety arrangements are missing in the absence of checking and proper monitoring.
