NEW DELHI: Social activist and leader Swami was heckled while going to headquarters to pay to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari . Due to security arrangements, no vehicles were allowed on Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, so Agnivesh had to walk the final stretch.
Senior police officers said that the incident occurred at 12.05pm at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg. Agnivesh had crossed the first security barricade when he was stopped by a few men and women, who questioned his purpose. An argument ensued during which the men started pushing Agnivesh and his supporters.

In a video recording of the incident, the Arya Samaj leader was seen being taken away by his supporters towards a car even as a woman is seen trying to hit him with a slipper. The men are also seen shoving him, calling him a traitor and anti-national.

Later, when the group surrounded Agnivesh, policemen intervened and shielded him from the punches. He was taken to a police van as the number of dissenters swelled and was escorted towards his car.

In a complaint submitted to Delhi Police, Agnivesh’s aide Vitthal Rai Arya, who was present when the incident occurred, said that the BJP workers began targeting them as soon as they came out of their car.

“Swami ji requested them to maintain patience as we were going to pay homage to former PM Vajpayee, but the workers continued to push us and ultimately stopped us from going ahead,” Arya said.

Arya also requested police to provide adequate security to Agnivesh following the incident, which is the second attack on him in a month. He was earlier assaulted on July 17 on a visit to Pakur district of Jharkhand, allegedly by activists of BJP Yuva Morcha.

Police are analysing the video of the attack and recording statements of eyewitnesses to take necessary action.
