Dalit families ostracised in Barmer village

JAISALMER: Nearly 70 Dalit families have been allegedly ostracised by the Rajpurohit community in Kaludi village, in , which also happens to be home to the Barmer Zila Pramukh.

Dinesh aka Dana Ram Meghwal, a resident of Kaludi, lodged a complaint with the police station on August 16, saying that the village’s Rajpurohit community has ordered the boycott of 70 Dalit families of the village. According to the FIR, few youths from the Rajpurohit community had made derogatory remarks against Dalits on social media. Following this, a person named Rawataram, a resident of Batty village, had lodged a case against the Rajpurohit youths under the provisions of SC/ST Act. Annoyed by this, two Rajpurohit youths called a meeting of their community and ordered the boycott of around 70 Dalit families, Meghwal alleged in his FIR.

The Balotra police have registered Meghwal’s complaint under IPC sections 323, 143, 341and 3(1) R, S, W (2), Z, A (ADE) of the SC/ST Act, against 17 people of the Rajpurohit community, including one Mukesh Singh, Ghewar Singh, Singh, , Aaidan Singh and Nen Singh. District SP Manish Agarwal has ordered investigation into the matter. Kaludi is 130km away from Barmer. Police are now guarding the village, since the past four days.

The Dalit families have been allegedly stopped from using water from the public water tank, buying provisions from stores and from sending their children to schools in the village, under the caste-based diktat. Meghwal, Prem Lata and Raji Devi, said that they are now forced to stay in their homes. Police have been deployed in the village, bringing the Dalit families little relief and ensuring that the children go to school.

Barmer SP Manish Agarwal said investigation is on, against the people named in the FIR. “The accused have been bound and police force has been deployed so that the victims are not harassed,” said Agarwal.

On the other hand, the Rajpurohit community has given a memorandum to CM Vasundhara Raje, through the SDM, demanding fair investigation.
