THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPM state secretariat is learnt to have directed to implement a change of guard at PuKaSa (), the cultural wing of the party. The state convention of PuKaSa scheduled to be held here on Sunday becomes significant in the wake of the CPM‘s decision. At present writer Vaisakhan is the president and Prof V N Murali is the secretary of PuKaSa. Normally, new office-bearers are elected in the state conference of the organization.

Vaisakhan won‘t be attending the convention on Sunday owing to health reasons. “I have requested to relieve me from the post as it has become tough to manage all responsibilities due to ill health,” Vaisakhan, who is also the president of Kerala Sahitya Academy, said. Murali, who recently took up the leadership of a cooperative bank, is also learnt to have requested to exempt him from the post.

Sources in the CPM said the party leadership has already ed a few cultural leaders with a request to take up the PuKaSa president post which had been held by the likes of Vyloppilly Sreedhara Menon, Prof M N Vijayan and Prof M K Sanoo in the past. It is learnt that poet Balachandran Chullikkad was approached by a senior CPM leader with the request but he expressed his inability. Filmmaker Shaji N Karun was also offered the post, but he is yet to make up his mind. Karun will be attending the session on Sunday and last-minute efforts are on to cajole him to accept the post.

Meanwhile, writer Asokan Charuvil is learnt to have agreed to become the new secretary of PuKaSa. If Karun says a final no, the mandate to lead the organization from the front may fall on K G Paulose, former VC of Sanskrit University, sources said.

Poet Satchidanandan will inaugurate the special convention at BTR Bhavan, Thampanoor, at 10.30am on Sunday. CPM state secretariat member P Rajeev, who is in charge of cultural organizations, will deliver the keynote address.
