Nagpur: Shiv Sena member of Parliament from Ramtek, Krupal Tumane, has claimed that in reply to a question raised by him during the latest session of Lok Sabha, the government has provided him data that shows rise in the number of farmer suicides in Maharashtra after 2013.
Tumane claimed that minister of state for agriculture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in reply to a specific question on farmer suicides, had clearly stated that the numbers have seen a gradual increase since the year 2013. The number of farm suicide cases registered in Maharashtra was 3,146 in 2013. But the very next year, 2014, it had mounted to 4,004. The MP further said that as per the chart provided by the minister in his reply, farm suicide cases in the state increased further to 4,291 in 2015.

In a statement released on Friday, Tumane went on to conclude that despite a slew of schemes and measures taken up by the Centre and the state, there was no let up in farm suicide cases and it was only rising.

To a supplementary on steps taken to check the rising suicides, the minister had replied that committees had been formed at the state and district levels to analyse the situation and suggest remedial actions.

The Sena MP charged the BJP governments at the Centre and the state with failing to curb farmer suicides. The allegation comes at a time when the BJP-Sena relations are uneasy though they are partners in power.
