AHMEDABAD: Cops making people take liquor detection tests through will now be a regular feature on weekends in the city with police deciding to keep a tab on drunken drivers.
The city traffic police have identified around 100 stretches where ‘drink and drive’ is common. In these areas, copls have plans to scan each and every vehicle driver. The spots include stretches on SG Road, Thaltej, and industrial areas like Changodar, and Odhav.
Police officials said that earlier cops used to conduct such checks during festivals, but it will now be run every . Cops will keep special watch on car drivers from control rooms, and if they are found acting suspiciously, local cops will be informed to check the driver and book him if necessary.
“We have decided on a close vigil at entry and exit points of the city on weekends and some secluded places which are used for parties. Police inspectors of respective areas and traffic department along with their team and a breathalyzer will inspect vehicle drivers, and if a person is found drunk then he or she will face legal action,” said DCP, Traffic (East) Akshayraj.
Akshayraj said that there are around 20 entry points to the city on which police will keep a watch. But duty at the points will be rotated according to real time inputs.
Sources in the police department said that Amdavadis usually hold weekend parties at their farmhouses on outskirts of the city after which they either take or SG Road to enter the city area. Police will keep close watch in these areas.
“There are reports of people getting drunk in industrial areas like Naroda, Vatva, Odhav and Changodar, who drive their vehicles within city after drinking, and it increases risks for all concerned,” said a police official.
