The All-India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) compiled by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development for the 2017-2018 academic year revealed that Bengaluru (Urban) has maximum number of colleges in the country, which is 893.
The survey covers all institutions of Higher Education in the country, registered with AISHE and institutions are categorised in three broad categories; including University, College and Stand-Alone Institutions.
Bengaluru (Urban) has topped the list for the second year in a row followed by Jaipur, which is at the second position with 558 colleges.
The survey also revealed that there are 15 universities exclusively for women,of which four are in Rajasthan, twoin and one each in AndhraPradesh, , Delhi, , , Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttarakhand and .
The key findings of the AISHE stated that the top eight states in terms of highest number of colleges include Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, , Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and . There are 500 General, 126 Technical,70 Agriculture and Allied, 58 Medical, 22 Law, 13 Sanskrit and 10 Language Universities and rest 83 Universities are of other categories.
The survey further revealed that in addition to one Central Open University, 14 State Open Universities and one State Private Open University, there are 110 Dual Mode Universities, which offer education through distance mode also and 16 of them are located in Tamil Nadu.
