GUWAHATI: As the state gears up for , have upped the ante to ensure peaceful celebrations.
Heavy alert has been sounded in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Darrang, Sonitpur, Biswanath districts and areas under the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts. “We are working in coordination with our counterparts in Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya to keep an eye on vulnerable and sensitive districts,” DGP Kuladhar Saikia said. “All security measures are in place to ensure that the people can participate in Independence Day celebrations without any fear or apprehension,” he added.

More than 50 have been set up at all entry and exit points of the city. To keep a vigil on riverine routes, river patrolling has been stepped up. The run-up to Independence Day or Republic Day in the region is usually marked by owing to ‘boycott‘ diktats issued by secessionist rebel groups against participating in the celebrations. While no such threat has been issued by any outfit so far, the state has already been on alert since the publication of the National Register of Citizens last month, with police conducting regular security reviews.

The Veterinary College Playground at Khanapara here will host I-Day celebrations. A multi-layer security cover has been put in place in the area.
