Five Noida girls, who created a mobile application to dispose of in an eco-friendly manner, have emerged winners at Technovation Challenge 2018 — an technology competition. EEDO will help users sell off old phones, chargers, laptops etc to e-waste management companies linked to the app.
TOI had reported about the selection of the team, ‘The Cantavits’, in the senior division of the competition held at San Francisco Bay Area, California, from August 6-9. The Indian team competed with five other teams from , State of Palestine, USA (two teams) and Spain. The girls have won a scholarship of 15,000 US dollars which they can use to publicise their project and pitch the app to companies to develop a business model and earn profit.
Students of , Sector 28, Aditi Jain, Shriya Shukla, Sneha Agarwal, Kritika Sharma and Shraddha Chug returned from California on August 11. Team leader Aditi told TOI that the app was conceived after they came across an article on the environmental hazards of e-waste, if not disposed of properly. “We discussed the idea with our coach and mentors who helped develop the app,” she said. Two technical analysts from Noida — Prajwal Shetty and Bhavesh Rawal — mentored the girls and Archana Jain, a teacher of Vishwa Bharati Public School, was their coach.
The idea was to create a mobile app to link gadget users with companies which dispose of e-waste, and generate profit. Aditi said the team collaborated with a Faridabad-based dealing in e-waste disposal. “Once the app is downloaded on Playstore, anyone with a gadget can upload its image and features on it, along with their phone numbers and addresses. The e-waste firm staff will directly the user. They will visit the user and offer a suitable price for the gadget,” she said, adding the team would get 10% profit to be used for app awareness campaigns.
“Now, we are studying android studio — a software which will help us get the app on Playstore. It should be done in the next six months,” said Aditi.
