KOLKATA: A Howrah station below another Howrah station, which promises to be the largest among all metro stations in the country, will be completed soon. The diaphragm of this station has already been completed and its roof slab has also been laid.
While trials of rakes for the East-West Metro Corridor under Rail Coporation Ltd (KMRCL) continue from its easternmost station at Salt Lake Sector-V, work is also progressing at a fast pace for construction of underground stations at the other end. According to managing director Parashuram Singh, slabs for the roof, concourse and base have already been laid at the station. Structural work for the station has also been completed.
“At Howrah Maidan, finishing work of the platform is in progress. The diaphragm at Howrah station (below the existing Howrah terminal) has also been completed. This station will have five slabs. Three of these will be the concourses and there will be a base slab. The fifth or roof slab has already been laid. The platform screen doors are also being installed during construction. We plan to have the stations ready before we hold final trials for Phase-II of the project,” added Singh.
The underground Howrah station will be the deepest in the country. Its base will be 30-metres below the surface. The tunnels from this depth dip further as they enter the Hooghly riverbed. While passing below the river the lowest points of the tunnels will be 37-metres.
“This station is being built below platforms 16 and 17 and will be one of the largest in the country. It will have three concourse levels to accommodate the large number of people expected to make a changeover from local trains to the metro there. The total floor area will be nearly three times that of a normal station. There will be direct access to the underground station from the overhead one to facilitate movementof suburban commuters,” a KMRCL official said.
If all moves as per plan, the stations will be completed by the end of 2020, well in time for the entire project to be commissioned in June, 2021.
