Mangaluru: The war of words between opposition leader in the legislative council Srinivas Poojary and minister for social justice Kharge transcended Twitter on Thursday with Poojary claiming Kharge’s remarks were in poor taste.
The two leaders had recently squared off online after Poojary had reminded Kharge of the need to ensure that BCM across Karnataka are in order. Poojary wanted Kharge to resign if he failed.
This brought a sharp riposte from Kharge who sought to know how much Poojary had set aside from his funds for SC/ST residential schools. “If you have concern for SCs/STs, seek resignation of PM Modi,” he tweeted.
While this exchange took place on August 3, Poojary told reporters on Thursday that Kharge’s reaction was poor in taste and showed the apathy of the government towards the plight of SCs/STs.
“As a member of the opposition, it is my duty to seek the resignation of non-performing ministers,” Poorjary said. “I had tweeted about the state of affairs at a post-metric hostel in Gadag during a surprise visit to the facility. The intention was to get Kharge to act,” he said.
Poojary was miffed since Kharge dragged the PM in to the debate. “Instead, he should have taken this as a challenge and assured that the lacunas pointed will be attended to rather than being churlish about it,” Poojary said.
Reminding Kharge that the opposition in the previous assembly had demanded setting up of a house committee to look into the state of affairs of hostels under the social welfare department, he said the government headed by Siddaramaiah had failed to meet this demand.
“Had this house committee been set up, it would have exposed various inadequacies of the department, a fact that then minister H Anjaneya himself admitted to,” Poojary said.
Exhorting Kharge to rethink the way he has come up in life and the work done by his father Mallikarjun Kharge for the welfare of the marginalised sections of society, Poojary said the BJP, on instructions of the state party chief B S Yeddyurappa, will inspect all such facilities across the state.
“If the minister is unable to improve the situation in two months, he should be ready to face a state-wide agitation seeking his ouster,” Poojary warned.
