VADODARA: Bodeli town, 60 from here, sunk into mourning after tragedy struck two families whose seven young children died in a gruesome accident near in late on Saturday night.
The rear wheel of the car in which the seven youngsters and three adults were travelling suddenly came off near Bhat village on Halol-Bodeli road. Taslim Arif Khatri, who was driving the car, lost control and veered into a roadside drain that was filled with water. As soon as the car fell into the drain, the driver-side door opened and Taslim jumped out. He somehow managed to save two girls Umiya and Parveen but the car began to sink and seven others drowned. Taslim called for help from the passers-by who called for an ambulance and the police. However, the seven youngsters had drowned by then.
Taslim had gone to meet his sister in and were on way back to Bodeli. He had taken along his and his brother Altaf Hussain Khatri’s children along, Jambughoda police said.
The Khatri brothers have a business of fabrication in Bodeli town.
Police and fire brigade pulled out the car and recovered bodies of Mohammed Bilal Khatri (17), Mohammed Rauf Khatri (14), Mohammed Sajid Khatri (13), Asina Khatri (11), Mohammed Tahir Khatri (11), Gul Afroz Khatri (13) and seven-year-old Mohammed Yusuf Khatri.
Bilal, Rauf and Tahir were sons of Taslim and Altaf’s elder brother Salim Khatri while Sajid and Asina were Altaf’s children. Gul and Yusuf were sons of Taslim.
Poignant scenes were witnessed in Bodeli as funeral procession of the children was taken out in the town on Sunday afternoon.
Taslim, Umiya and Parveen who suffered injuries have been admitted to Bodeli for treatment. Police said that it is investigating the reasons behind the car’s tyre coming off and if there was any negligence on the part of the driver.
