CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is set to convert some of the free parking spaces in the city into paid parking lots. Currently, there are around 73 free parking lots in the city and the civic body is mulling to turn around 20 to 25 of them into paid parking spaces, especially those situated in core commercial areas of Chandigarh.

Joint municipal commissioner Tejdeep Singh on Friday held a meeting with parking wing officers and in this regard. As the MC has already conducted a detailed survey of all the non-paid parking lots of the city, it has prepared a collective data specifying the areas and expected parking capacity of these lots.

According to sources, In first phase of the project, out of the 73 free parking lots in UT, the MC has decided to convert 20 to 25 of them into paid parking spaces.

All these parking lots are situated in the markets along the V-3 roads. As most of these lots do not have paid parking systems are are loacted along major roads such as the Madhya Marg, such parking spaces are being seriously considered for conversion so that people are able to pay and park without any hassles, sources revealed.

Even though it is just the initial stage of the exercise, the charges of these newly discussed parking lots will remain similar to the existing paid parking fees being charged by the Arya Infra Toll Limited Company.

“We have to keep the charges similar because we can’t reduce them than the existing ones,” an MC official said.

Significantly, the final call on the issue of converting the free parking spaces into paid parking lots will be taken by the house of the MC. The officers will prepare the details and submit the same before the house for discussion and consideration.

The said move is supposed to bring some relief to the cash-strapped MC by enhancing its overall revenue generation.
