2 Romanians held for fixing skimmers in 4 ATMs

CHANDIGARH: The crime branch of the Chandigarh Police have arrested two foreigners for fixing and spy cameras at Canara Bank’s four in Chandigarh and .

While addressing mediapersons at the police headquarters in Sector 9, Ravi Kumar, SP (crime), said the accused are Miclea Lecian Lonut, 37, and Paraschiv George Aletandru, 37. Both hail from Brasav in Romania. The two had come to the country on a two-month tourist visa. The SP said they were arrested from Delhi on Friday. Police claimed to have recovered wigs, caps and clothes from them. The accused had changed their looks by wearing wigs, spectacles and caps before installing skimmers to dodge cops and bank officials, the SP said.

Police had registered three FIRs against unknown persons at sectors 17 and 36 and Manimajra for installing skimmer devices in . One device was fixed at an in Mohali.

Cops said the accused during interrogation told them they reached the city on August 2 and returned to Delhi after completing their work on August 5. During their visit, the accused stayed at a hotel in Sector 35 and another in Sector 43.

Later, they came back to the city to collect the devices from the ATM machines, but bank officials had detected them, police said.

Police said they revealed that after collecting the ATM data of customers, they were planning to return to their country and use the details for online shopping and withdrawing money.

On how police got clues in the case, the SP said they accessed the data of foreigners who had stayed in the city during the period skimmers were installed. “After scrutinizing the list, we zeroed in on the two Romanians and matched the CCTV footage of the ATM cops with their photographs,” he said.

Police said the accused told them that they had read about the Digital India campaign launched by the government, expecting that a majority of people had started using credit/debit cards. Cops said the accused targeted only unguarded and old model ATMs of Canara Bank.

A local court sent them in three-day police remand.
